What is the main aim of this site.
I wish to Rescue as many at risk Native Bee colony’s as I can to promote the natural pollination of our native bush environment and also by loaning hives to local farmers investigate the potential for crop pollination by Native bees compared to honey bees in my local area. The aim of this site is to make aware the people who may come into contact with these bees the plight of these amazing insects when trees are removed, land is cleared or the often strange structures they find themselves in are disturbed. I expect this would mainly refer to arborist, tree fellers, land clearers,or gardeners etc.when you call I will come as quickly as possible to relocate the bees, only the tiny black native stingless bees ( TETRAGONOLA CARBONARIA not honey bees APIS MELLIFIRA)to a new safe hive structure where they can be carefully nurtured back to full hive strength, this will require some months of care. I wish to develop my own system of solar heating and cooling these hives so they can be loaned to local farmers to try and promote a different quality of pollination to that of honey bees.I also wish to place some hives once well established into local primary schools as an introduction of the species to school children.
What am I asking of people who discover these bees in situations of disruption
- Please give me a call on 0412227636 preferably or by the above email address prior to cutting down the tree or disturbing the nest.
- If this was not possible and the nest has been cut into please try to make two cuts approximately 600 mm either side of the hive entrance hole and cover the original cut in some way or if the log has been completely severed still make the two cuts away from the entrance hole and place the two halves back together and i will repair the damage when I arrive.
- I understand that time is precious to working people and it may not be possible to spend to much of it in looking after a cut hive but all I ask is for a quick phone call so that I can get to the site as quickly as possible in order to save as many bees as I can.
- I’m in this for the long haul and wish to develop the solar cooler and heaters to help with expanding the range that tetragonula carbonara bees can be kept.
